New Year happens on the 5th of October (Sunday). The Maya are known for meticulously measuring time through their intricate calendar system. One of the most important calendars is the Cholq’ij, also known as Tzolk’in, which times earth-connection and community rituals during a cycle of 260 days. Each day has a unique frequency and purpose that emerges from the combination of two wheels: 13 numbers (tones) & 20 day signs (Nahuales).
The Cholq’ij is also used to divine your birth sign to learn more about the influencing energies, life lessons, spiritual gifts, and leadership qualities in your life. For the Maya, each Soul has a sacred purpose in a community. If everybody brings in their unique strenghts, the community as a whole forms a sacred tapestry as a unified but multifaceted whole.
The Sacred Mayan Calendar shows the influencing Nahuales (energies) that define your private life, your public life and your character. It links the past with the present and shows where lessons need to be learned (or repeated as the day signs in a 260-day-cycle repeat).

8 B’atz: The Mayan New Year (5th October 2025)
According to Mayan belief, each 260 days the world is created anew (which gives us a chance to create our world anew!). This is when the Mayan New Year for the Cholq’ij is celebrated!
A Mayan month according to the Cholq’ij is 13 x 20 days. 260 days of gestation similar to the time a baby spends in the womb of the mother. The creation of the new world therefore starts on the day 1 B’atz (B’atz being the first sign of the Calendar and meaning creation, invention, and manifestation), while it ends on 7 T’zi (the ultimate judge, the last sign of the Mayan Calendar).
The 20 Days of Creation 2025 would look like this then:
| 1 B’atz (Creativity) 2 E (Sacred Road) 3 Aj (Masculine) 4 I’x (Feminine) 5 Tz’ikin (Abundance) 6 Ajmaq (Forgiveness) 7 N’oj (Sacred Wisdom) 8 Tijax (Cord Cutting) 9 Kawok (Community) 10 Ajpu (Warrior) 11 Imox (Psychic) | 12 Iq’ (Leader) 13 Ak’ab’al (Duality) 1 K’at (Network) 2 Kan (Life Force) 3 Keme (Transformation) 4 Kiej (Stability) 5 Q’Anil (Seeds) 6 Toj (Sacred Fire) 7 Tz’i (Judge, Order) 8 B’atz (New Year) |
Coupled with the current 13-day sign 1 K’at (the overarching sign for the 13-day period of the calendar) this makes it even more auspicious, as K’at siginifies the net. This relates to catching things, cutting cords and untangling stuff that’s no longer healthy.
Weaving a sacred net for the new earth so to speak. Connected to the overarching year bearer from the Solar Ha’ab Calendar – 13 Iq (authentic leadership) – this makes a holy trinity this year.

Rituals on the Mayan New Year
On the day of the Mayan New Year, 8 B’atz (Waqxakib’ B’atz), the Maya gather around the sacred fire for fire rituals and blessings. The Aj’qij (Mayan spiritual leaders) hold the ceremony and new spiritual priests and priestesses are initiated on this day.
It’s a highly auspicious time that connects the ending of the previous cycle of 7 B’atz (40 days ago on 26th August 2025, which completed the creation cycle that started on 18th January 2025) and the start of the new creation on 1 B’atz (15th September 2025). Check back, which inspiration hit you in January that you have or haven’t completed till August?
For the new cycle, you can honor the 20 Nahuales (day signs) that are combined with the tones of the 13 numbers over the next 260 days, by taking a moment to honor these energies and lighting 20 candles, asking for their guidance and wisdom to understand them.
In your home set the tone for a new beginning, ideally the days before the Mayan New Year already. Throw out what no longer serves you, decide on which thoughts to disengage from, bring order into your home, smudge your space, and “clear the air” so that creativity can flow freely again!
The Mayan Sacred Calendar: A Guide to Being in the Present Moment
As the Mayan Calendar is the supreme example of “being in the present moment” and not putting anything off for later, since each day has a unique vibrational signature, this is a reminder that every inspiration that hits you starting from Sunday, October 5th, 2025 – is a divine inspiration that you are here to bring to life in the gestation period of 260 days.
It’s good to remember that some ideas need to put into practice immediately to carry the daily energy they came to you with, so that your container of creation shares a unique vibrational frequency with your audience.
